Registering Your Vehicle in Austin
Texas is serious about vehicle registration. Make sure that all inspections and registrations are current to avoid a costly ticket later. This is a very common problem for newcomers to Texas. Most people don’t know that you have to register your car in Austin within the first 30 days of your arrival. To register your car in Austin, Texas, one must:
Get your vehicle inspected at any state approved inspection station. The fee is $12.50 for a one year safety approval inspection.
If your car passes inspection, the next step is to take the inspection certification and proof of insurance to the county tax office. If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, you must provide mileage. You must also have the original title for your vehicle present. If you no longer have a title you can either re-apply for a copy from your home state or use proof of payment of sales tax.
Fill out and submit a vehicle registration form and pay a registration fee. The fee is usually $20-$60 depending upon the size of your car.
