Car Inspection in Austin, Lakeway, Round Rock and Cedar Park and Surrounding Areas
If you are already a licensed driver in Austin and your inspection has expired, it’s time you registered yourself before going in for inspection. Vehicle inspection is an important part in driving around in Texas.
For those who are new to Austin and who want to get a license, you have to first register your vehicle. But in order to get the registration done, your vehicle needs to be inspected first. So, for newcomers, it is inspection followed by registration and for Texans, it’s the other way around.
Generally speaking, states honor the laws of other states through reciprocal agreements. For instance, if a vehicle is registered in Texas and is in another state where the inspection is to be done, then the other state with which Texas has an agreement will honor your inspection sticker.
Though there are many locations where you can renew your tags, if your tags have been expired for a period more than 30 days, then you have to mail it or go in person to the Tax Assessor’s office. Under normal circumstances, you can renew your tags using the Texas Online Vehicle Registration Renewal, which is a fairly simple process.
Texas laws govern that drivers must have annual safety inspection of their vehicles. All inspections include a comprehensive safety inspection. Some vehicles are required to undergo an emission test in addition to the safety inspection. Motorcycles and diesel powered vehicles are exempt from the emission test, but still required to have an annual safety inspection. Texas is one of the few states which have this ‘dual inspection’ program since 1996. The entire inspection process comes under the Texas Department of Public Safety.
These inspections are typically done at several dealerships, auto service facilities, and service stations around Austin. One thing that is mandatory during inspection is the proof of insurance. If you don’t have insurance you can get one from your current insurance carrier. During inspection things like horns, wipers, mirrors, brakes, lights, window tinting and horns are checked and inspected. In case you are new to Austin from out-of-state one has to obtain a Vehicle identification Certificate, Form VI – 30-A from an inspection station. Then the vehicle is inspected and the inspection station fills out the verification portion of the form. This form is then used for getting a vehicle registered.
