Rowing Lessons in Austin Texas

Here in Austin we are lucky enough to have an abundance of outdoor sports, perhaps one of the neatest is rowing. As a rower myself, I have to say, when I am sculling down Town Lake, I feel like I am flying compared to those walking and running on the sidelines.

Watch this video about learning to row, then read on to find out more about taking rowing lessons in Austin.

If your interested in getting started, there are three rowing centers in Austin: The Rowing Dock, Townlake Rowing Center and the Austin Rowing Center. The Rowing Dock is the only one that is located on the south side of the river, while the other two lie on the north side of the river, one near the Four Seasons hotel and the other right off the hike and bike trail further west toward Mopac. The three differ in the prices and training. The Austin Rowing Center is the only rowing outfitter of the three that is a non profit and communally owned.

Austin Price Check! All three centers vary, although estimate that you will be paying anywhere from $13 to $30/class. Private coaching can cost between $35-$50 per session and memberships are approximately $30-$50/month.

Rowing Lessons
It really is necessary to have lessons before rowing by yourself, you would be surprised at how ackward a boat that side can make you feel. Some of the centers actually require a beginner class series before letting you go out on your own. This is valuable as it gives you the opportunity to see if you are more interested in sculling (single man boat) or sweeping (the boats that have 2 or more rowers)

Austin Money Savers Tip Inquire about discounts for buying a several month package up front or grouping your membership with classes or coaching.
