The thought of finding a private music teacher can be overwhelming for anyone. This is often due to the potential student feeling uneasy about having no musical background, hence not knowing what to look for. Finding a music teacher is the easy part. Ask for referrals from friends or call up your local music professor or Symphony office. They should have plenty of suggestions to get you started. Once you have found a few people, choosing the right teacher is what becomes tricky. Here are some questions to ask in order to make a decision on who is right for you.

Inquire about training
There are too many poorly trained music teachers in the world teaching bad habits. A music teacher that knows what they are doing can catch bad habits before they start. Bad habits become more difficult to break down the road. Search for someone with formal training.

Teaching Experience
Knowing how to play an instrument and knowing how to teach are two completely different things. An individual who has had college music training will most likely have had formal classes in music education along with teaching experience. Ask about their teaching background, and ask for references. Talking to the parents of other students will help get a sense of what the teacher has to offer and also ensure you of your child’s safety.

Tip! Any teacher not willing to give you a reference is a serious red flag!

Working with different age groups
Some teachers are able to work well with real young children and are not as skilled teaching older children or adults.

Tip! Find out what age groups they like working with, it could be possible the instructor is better teaching a different age group then what you are looking for.

If you are an adult wanting beginner lessons, let the teacher know about your learning interests. A good teacher should cater the lesson to the specific learning goals of the adult.

Price
Do not search for a bargain when it comes to music lessons. Music educators are professionals. Cheap lessons are cheap lessons!

Austin Price Check! The average cost of a lesson ranges from $20 -$30 per ½ hour .It is better to have 2 lessons per month with the right teacher instead of 4 with the less expensive teacher.

Getting started
Ask to have a sample lesson to see how your child gets along with the teacher before signing any contract. Once you've selected someone, ask to sit in on a few lessons in order to observe the relationship developing between your child and the teacher. Look for the teacher to inspire and your child to cooperate.

Business

Make sure all Teacher policies; regarding fees, cancellations and scheduling are in writing.

Practice

Please remember to practice. Keep in mind that the teacher has made a time commitment to teach you. Honor this by committing to a practice schedule.
