Finding a Tutor in Austin

There are tutors available for people of any age, that have a desire to learn about almost anything. Tutors help school-age children to learn primary subjects as well as help others learn languages, financial skills, dance, cooking, philosophy, religion, professional skills, and just about anything else you can think of. Tutors are a great way to get personal attention on a one on one basis from a real professional.

Finding a good tutor regardless of your age, goals and subject matter can be a challenge. The key to tutoring is making a connection between the tutor and client so that your shared time can be as effective as possible. Most people prefer tutors verses learning in a classroom because of this personal connection, which means it is absolutely essential to find someone you “click with.” Here are some things to consider when looking for an Austin tutor:

Personality
Because it is so important to find a tutor in Austin that you connect with, consider “interviewing” tutors first. Many tutors will not meet in person for this, but you can prepare a list of questions to discuss over the phone. Within the first few minutes you should be able to identify whether or not you and your tutor will work well together.

Sample questions to ask may be:

  • How long have you been a tutor in Austin?
  • Is tutoring your career choice or simply a hobby?
  • What topics do you tutor in most often?
  • What is your expertise and training in ________?
  • How much do you charge? By the hour? By the session?
  • Do you have discounts for booking several sessions at once?
  • Where do you prefer to meet?
  • Do you charge for travel time?
  • How do you deal with a client that is not understanding what you are trying to teach?
  • What is your style of tutoring?
  • If we make a commitment to work together, but I feel as though we are not connecting, am I able to switch tutors?
  • Do you require a contract for services?
  • Do you require a contract for services?
  • How many people have you helped in this subject?
  • What age group do you typically work with?

Cost
Academic tutors in Austin charge anywhere between $15-$25/hour. Language tutors will expect a similar fee, as do music tutors. Professionals in the fitness/dance field would typically expect between $20-$40/hour. Think of it in the perspective of supply and demand- the more tutors qualified in that topic, the more affordable. For example, if there are 100 spanish tutors in Austin, but only one tutor that teaches Swahili, the Swahili tutor may feel inclined to charge more for his/her unique skill.

Austin Money Savers Tip Many tutors in Austin will provide discounts if you book several sessions at a time.

Location
Make sure you choose a tutor that is in your area. It will become increasingly challenging for both you and your tutor to meet on a regular basis if there is a long commute. Try to find somewhere that is close for both of you, such as a coffee shop or local diner.

Keep in Mind Some Austin tutors may charge for travel time if they have to come to your house, or if meeting you entails a long commute.

Tutors in Austin can be a great way to learn a new skill, hobby or academic study. Just remember to really research the tutor’s style, costs, and location before making a decision.
