Picnic Fun in Austin Texas

Austin is well-known for their beautiful parklands. They have over 16,000 acres that contain 14 sanctuaries for native plants, native animals, and unique natural features, 208 parks, and 25 parklands on creeks and canyons. The Austin Parks Foundation is an active nonprofit organization that uses volunteers to help preserve the beauty of the parks. This foundation began in 1992. Let me give you a sample of some of the most popular parks in Austin to go for a picnic with the family and other recreational events.

The Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater is found at 2206 William Barton Drive in Austin. This natural amphitheater is set among a grove of giant 100-year-old pecan trees and several events take place here throughout the summer. The Austin Symphony or Austin Civic Orchestra performs there and the park yearly hosts a Summer Musical and Shakespeare in the Park. This lovely park is the perfect place to spread your blanket, have a picnic, and enjoy the entertainment or just revel in the scenic beauty and natural settings of this beautiful park.

The Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve found near Austin in Travis County is said to host 75000 visitors per year. Its a historic swimming hole found ¾ miles upstream from the Pednales River. It has outcroppings of limestone, which creates a 50-foot waterfall that plunges into a natural box canyon. The preserve is home to the Golden-Cheeked Warbler and various other birds. It has areas of native grasses and wild flowers, rare plant species such as the chatterbox orchid that grows along areas around Hamilton Creek. Culture remains have been found that go back over 8000 years. Some of the available activities at this beautiful park include swimming, picnicking areas with tables, hiking trails, nature study, and guided tours. Rest rooms are also available in this unique natural area of pool, grotto, and canyon.

Another beautiful park to picnic and take advantage of outdoor activities is McKinney Falls State Park. It's located at 5808 McKinney Falls Parkway in Austin and has been open to the public since 1976. Activites available in this beautiful state park are camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing and wildlife observation. Swimming is now allowed in Onion Creek but call ahead for current creek conditions. The phone number is 512-243-1643. There are various tours and events that you may take part in, each with a fee charged per person.
