Who wants to leave their pet at home when they go on vacation? Traveling with a pet can be difficult. Read this article to find out everything that needs to be done in order to be able to bring your pet with you.
At the veterinarians office make sure to
■ Collect pet health certificate and vaccinations
■ Investigate sedation for your pet during the trip
■ Have your pet vaccinated 30 days prior to overseas travel
■ Get current rabies tag if your pet doesn’t already have one
■ Do not travel with sick, pregnant, very old or very young pets
Did you know? Many hotels in Austin are pet friendly. In general, large hotel chains such as the Holiday Inn, Hilton, Mariott and Sheraton will allow for you to bring your pet. Call ahead to inquire.
Safe Travel
■ Pets traveling in a car should be properly restrained for safety
■ Get a pet carrier or wire crate to secure cats and/or dogs
■ Kennel should allow pet room to stand, lie down and turn around
■ Line bottom of kennel with towels for comfort and to absorb spills
■ Include a small litter box for cats
■ Attach holders for water and food
■ Put animal in crate regularly before traveling to get accustomed to the kennel
■ Never leave your animal in a parked car, even with a window down

■ Take short trips with your animal to get them used to the motion of a vehicle
■ Air transport of cats and dogs less than 8 weeks old is prohibited
■ Only seeing eye dogs may travel on trains or buses
■ Pets may travel on airlines if crated in proper container
■ Some airlines allow pets in cabin if crate will fit under seat
■ Larger pets must be stored in the cargo area as “air freight”

Traveling with small animals
■ Keep bird cage covered to protect the animal from drafts and stress
■ Feed small animals regularly and water at rest stops
On travel day
■ Do not feed your pet less than 5-6 hours before the trip
■ Feed pet only 1/3 of the normal amount of food to prevent sickness
■ Give water and any medications 1-2 hours before leaving
■ Exercise pet before travel
■ Limit feeding of your pets to once a day during travel time
■ Plan regular stops for water and exercise
When you arrive
■ Keep the animal in a quiet area until they adjust
■ Put dish, litter box, and other supplies in familiar locations
■ Allow your pet to explore and get comfortable
