Travel Tips for Austin

We all know how hectic traveling can be. Each part of the process can be timely and expensive. Read these tips about finding a deal, making reservations, protecting your interests, and travleing with children to make your trip as easy and cost effective as possible.

Did you know? There are a multitude of travel agencies in Austin. Many of them deal with all kinds of travel, but others have certain specialties such as cruises or vacation packages. If you're looking for something in particular, it is a good idea to find a specialized vendor.

To find a deal

■ Ask if your airline offers discount seats for children
■ Look for airline agents who work with “consolidators”
■ Check several nearby cities for the best fare
■ Flying farther away and renting a car can save you money
■ If the advertised fare lowers after purchase, ask vendor if they can re-ticket you at the lower cost
■ Shop for internet only and web-only fares
■ Be flexible regarding your flight time and day to get to get a better deal
■ Plan for a Saturday stay-over
■ Travel mid-week and return mid-week

Making Reservations

■ Schedule your flight early in the day to reduce potential delays
■ Avoid stops in areas that regularly experience bad weather
■ Avoid sitting by lavatories for a quieter trip
■ Try not to be seated in the last seat- you will be unable to recline your chair
■ See if there are open seats in an exit row, you will have more leg room
■ Request a seat near the front of the plane if you know you have a short connection time
■ Ask for an aisle seat for more leg room

Protecting your interests

■ Buy your ticket with a credit card in case you have problems
■ Travel insurance will protect you if flight is cancelled or delayed
■ Read all travel insurance policies carefully for exclusions
■ Check your tickets for errors as soon as you receive them
■ Take into consideration time zones and make sure that you are at the airport 2 hours before the time listed on your ticket
■ Store tickets in a safe place
■ Give someone your itinerary
■ Place your name, contact information and itinerary in your luggage
■ Put a cell phone number on your luggage tags so that if your baggage is lost, someone can reach you wherever you are
■ Lock your luggage before checking bags

Before flying

■ Plan to leave so you arrive at the airport at least two hours early
■ Plan transportation ahead of time
■ Check the weather at all airports along your route
■ Double check your departure time and flight number

Flying with children

■ Bring snacks in pre-packed ziplock bags
■ Give your infant a bottle to suck on to reduce ear pressure
■ Bring a bag of toys, coloring books, etc. to keep your kids occupied
■ Bring wet wipes, a rag and a change of clothes
■ Request an aisle seat for easy access to the bathroom
■ Try not to sit in the middle or window seat with a fidgety child
