Austin Massage Therapy Modalities

Types of Massage
There are at least 80 distinct forms of massage taught in the US today. Each of these affects multiple body systems (muscular, skeletal, fascial, nervous, lymphatic, circulatory, immune, energetic) but they differ in their primary focus, their organizing principles, and their origins. Most therapists integrate the modalities they are trained in to best meet the needs of the individual client. The most commonly offered modalities include the following:

Swedish Massage
Swedish massage (Austin Body Massage) focuses on relaxing muscles and increasing circulation using gliding strokes, kneading, friction, percussion and vibration, with the application of oil or lotion. It is highly relaxing and may use light to deep pressure, but generally focuses on superficial muscular layers.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a general term for modalities which focus on deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue in order to relieve chronic tension. Pressure is medium to intense, but not usually painful, and oil use is minimal. Techniques such as Rolfing and Myofascial Release specifically target the fascia, the web of connective tissue which permeates and supports the body’s soft tissues. Restrictions in fascia (caused by injury, lack of movement, dehydration or other factors) pull in all directions and can cause pain and postural imbalance.

Sports massage uses elements of Swedish, Deep massage, stretching and hydrotherapy to enhance athletic performance, targeting muscle groups used in particular sports, aiding in conditioning, preventing injury, and speeding recovery. Several types of Sports massage are used depending on the stage of training or competition.

Shiatsu Thai Massage
Shiatsu, Thai massage and acupressure apply stretches and pressure using fingers, elbows, knees and feet to stimulate the energy meridians throughout the body. Sessions usually take place on a padded floor surface, with the client comfortably clothed. These techniques are deeply relaxing and energizing and help increase range of motion.

Spa Treatments
Spa treatments offered by massage therapists include Hot Stone massage, body scrubs and wraps, facials, hydrotherapy, and lymphatic drainage. Most of these therapies focus on relaxation and detoxification of the skin and body.

Medical Massage

Medical or Orthopedic massage incorporates many techniques to aid in recovery from injuries or chronic pain, including deep tissue massage, structural bodywork, hydrotherapy, neuromuscular therapy, and lymphatic drainage. Medical massage practitioners usually have highly specialized training and their services may be covered by insurance.
