How to Choose a Salon in Austin

Choosing an Austin hair salon is not an easy task, considering we are lucky enough to have over 1200 of them.

Consider these factors when finding a salon in Austin:

Location: For many, choosing a hair salon located in the area in which you live or work is a very important consideration. It is convenient to scoot away from work during your lunch hour or on your way home for a quick cut or color.

Cost: It always shocks me how much some salons charge for a simple visit. Salons in Austin charge anywhere from $8-$100 for a women’s cut. A male’s cut is always cheaper than a woman’s. Some stylists feel that they can charge this much because they really are very talented, or have a lot of years experience, or are one of the best in a certain kind of service, such as short cuts, color, etc. That doesn’t necessarily mean that if a stylist doesn’t charge a lot they aren’t worth it – some salons require a minimum charge because of the name, or image. Typically, when a stylist is doing an apprenticeship or has just recently graduated from Cosmetology school, they charge less, and increase their prices with more experience.

Austin Money Savers Tip If you are trying to stay on a budget, when you call a salon, ask which stylist is the most inexpensive. If the stylists rent out space at a salon, they can charge whatever they want.

Amenities: Many hair salons are seeing the value in expanding their services to be full service salons, offering many more services such as massage, waxing, aromatherapy, etc. Do you enjoy those things? Is it essential that you have those services? Would you use them if they were offered?

Image: Salons in Austin are completely different from one another. We live in a wonderful city, that encourages people to be individuals, to express their own sense of style. That individualism is defiantly prevalent in our salons and stylists. For example, if you love being served a cup of tea in a dainty and quaint yellow room with floral prints everywhere and lovely stylists, there’s a place for you. If you are the kind of person that gets off on deep purple, gold and silver lush couches, cement floors, flurescent green haired stylists chopping away to the White Stripes and chugging a Red Bull, you can find that in Austin too. Look at the sign outside the door. Then take a peek around the inside. Look at the stylists. Most importantly, look at their hair and their clients hair. Do you fit in? If not, go to the next. There is a salon in Austin as unique as you.
