Tailors construct, alter, or repair items of clothing. Custom tailors make garments for people who prefer or require clothing made especially for them. They also make alterations to their customers' clothes. Shop and alteration tailors make changes to ready-to-wear clothing. They usually work in clothing stores or other retail outlets.
Did you know? Many drycleaning companies in Austin will also do alterations.
Custom tailors make garments from start to finish. They begin by talking to customers about the items they want made. They take customers' measurements and help them select the best fabrics and designs. Tailors often work from existing designs and patterns, which they alter to fit customers' measurements. However, they sometimes create their own designs and draw their own patterns. When the patterns are ready, tailors position the pattern parts onto the fabric. They must be careful to match the design of the fabric for each piece. Then they cut the fabric along the pattern outlines.

Tailors usually join the pattern parts using basting stitches. These are loose stitches that are easy to remove. Then they fit the basted garments on customers, and mark any areas that need adjustments. Finally, tailors finish garments by joining the parts with permanent stitching and ripping out basting stitches. As a last step, they add buttons and buttonholes.
Alteration tailors first fit garments on customers and observe how they look. Next, they measure parts, such as sleeves or pant legs. They make marks or pin folds on the garments to show where alterations should be made. They record instructions on tags and attach them to the garments.
Next, tailors measure and mark alteration lines on garments. Then they remove old stitching and re-sew on the marked lines. This step varies depending on the alteration. For example, tailors may raise or lower hemlines or add shoulder pads. These are somewhat simple tasks and are often sewn by hand. Tailors also perform complex alterations using sewing machines. For example, they may change waist or chest sizes, or raise or lower collars or lapels. They also sometimes repair or replace defective garment parts, such as pockets or linings. Tailors who work in large businesses may specialize in only one or two functions. When alterations are done, tailors press garments using a hand iron or pressing machine.
