Austin Optometrists Differ From Other Eye Care Professionals

Optometrists examine patients' eyes to diagnose vision problems. They prescribe corrective lenses or other treatments. Over half the people in the United States wear glasses or contact lenses. Optometrists provide eye care to these people and to those who do not need glasses. Optometrists treat vision problems and eye diseases. They use instruments and observation to determine the health of patients' eyes. They test patients' vision by having them read charts of letters.

Austin Price Check! Higher end vision centers in Austin charge between $75-$100 for an exam and $85-95 for contact fitting. You can find better deals at other ophthalmologists who charge $50 for an exam and $45-$60 for contact lense fitting. Contact lense fitting gets more expensive depending upon if you have an astigmatism.

In addition, they test patients' color perception and ability to focus and coordinate their eyes. Finally, they analyze test results and create a treatment plan. Optometrists explain treatment plans to patients and answer their questions. They also document their observations and test results in patients' charts.

For patients who have vision problems, optometrists use special equipment to determine the prescription for corrective lenses. They have patients look through this equipment while they change the strength of the lenses. Optometrists ask patients which of several lens corrections improves the clarity of their vision.

Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and vision therapy. In some states, they may also prescribe drugs to treat eye disorders.

Some optometrists use computerized instruments to make diagnoses. These instruments allow technicians to do some of the tests that previously were performed by optometrists. Some optometrists specialize in one area, such as contact lenses or vision therapy. Some specialize in working with one type of patient, such as children or the elderly.

Keep in Mind! Check with your insurance company before seeing any eye professional, many insurance companies will cover all or part of the exam as well as glasses or contacts.

The tasks of optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists are distinct. Opticians dispense contact lenses and eyeglasses, but do not examine eyes or prescribe treatment. Ophthalmologists are doctors who specialize in providing medical and surgical care for eyes.

Most optometrists own their businesses and must complete administrative tasks. They may hire employees, keep records, order equipment, and advertise their business.
