Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world originating in and practiced in China for over 5,000 years and it is more than needling alone. It is an art, a philosophy, and a complete medical system. It is also a science developed on the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory.
Today, one of the hottest topics in healthcare is obesity and the adverse effects excess body fat may have on ones health. More and more Americans are now seeking alternative healthcare and the number of patients turning to acupuncture is growing exponentially, especially for losing weight safely and effectively.
There are many factors causing or relating to overweight conditions. In the view of TCM, it is a sign indicating there is an imbalance inside the body. It is commonly believed that eating too much is the cause of weight gain. This is not always true. In fact, in many cases, gaining weight is not related to how much you eat but instead to an internal disharmony.
Allow me to digress, in TCM theory, the human body is made up of the physical and the spiritual or mental self which must be in harmony or balance. Qi, loosely translated into life energy, travels in meridians that unify the body and maintains balance and blood circulation. A lack of Qi or its obstruction may cause the body to accumulate its waste products. This accumulation causes weight gain and fat stores toxins. It is also true that some diseases cause abnormal weight gain and gaining weight increases the incidence of many diseases ranging from diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Acupuncture is one of the healthiest methods of detoxifying the body, rectifying internal organ and endocrine function and removing excess fatty tissue by building up qi and opening the meridians which in turn accelerate your body’s metabolism.
It has been explained and proven both clinically and scientifically that needling directly stimulates the nervous system to improve neuromuscular, vascular and organ/endocrine system function. Also, the combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine prevents the conversion of carbohydrates into fat, lowers blood pressure and LDLs, “the bad cholesterol”.
Like a beautiful mountain in the mist, acupuncture still remains enigmatic to a majority of modern society which seems a long way from completely understanding its effective mechanisms. For people who are concerned about their health, it is important to find a safe and effective mode to losing weight such as acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. That said, with acupuncture you will not lose weight too quickly which often results in rebound weight gain. Acupuncture is safe. Moreover, it improves your overall health by treating the root of the disease thus resolving all related and seemingly unrelated symptoms.
