Austin Cabinetry General Information

Cabinetmakers build cabinets and other items that are made from wood.
Cabinetmakers construct or repair items made from wood. They read blueprints or examine drawings to learn about the items they will make. Sometimes cabinetmakers talk to customers about their needs. Once cabinetmakers know the dimensions of the item, they measure and mark outlines of the parts on paper or wood. Then they cut, trim, and sand the parts. To put the parts together, they use glue, nails, and screws. Once the entire unit is assembled, cabinetmakers finish the wood by applying stain and varnish. Finally, they attach glass and hardware, such as handles, to the furniture. Cabinetmakers may install what they have built.

Keep in Mind Buying cabinetry from the actual maker can be a benefit as many can customize it for you, for a pri ce. However, if you go to a home improvement store to buy cabinetry, remember the salespeople are just that...wanting to make a sale. If you are looking through a showroom, do NOT let the salespeople persuade you that one set of cabinets is going to be 80% more than the next. They may be pricy, but never that much of a markup. To get non bias advice on buying cabinets, you may want to consult a general interior designer.

Cabinetmakers use power tools such as circular saws, jointers, planers, routers, and sanders. They also use hand tools such as screwdrivers and hammers. They clean and oil their tools and perform basic repairs. In addition, cabinetmakers clean their workshops by sweeping or vacuuming up the sawdust.

Many cabinetmakers run their own businesses. In addition to building items, these cabinetmakers have other duties. They pay bills, invoice clients, find new customers, and keep track of supplies.

Austin Price Check! ASC had a very difficult time trying to find an "average price" for cabinets. The prices varied depending upon the quality. In GENERAL, you can anticipate spending between $2,000-$5,000 for a complete kitchen and $150-$500 for a bathroom.

Cabinetmakers perform the following activities on a regular basis:

  • Read blueprints for the items to be constructed or repaired. Plan how work will be completed.
  • Set up and operate power tools and machines to cut and shape wood.
  • Mark dimensions of parts on paper or lumber. Match lumber for color, grain, and texture.
  • Trim joints to create a snug fit.
  • Nail parts together to create components of cabinets, such as drawers.
  • Fit, glue, and clamp components together to form complete units.
  • Sand or scrape surfaces to smooth and prepare them for finishing.
  • Apply stain, varnish, or lacquer, using brushes or spray guns.
  • Install hinges, catches, and drawer pulls, using hand tools.
  • Find new clients, keep track of expenses, and order supplies when needed.
