There, she worked for a non profit called Girls, Inc, that worked to expose teenage girls to non traditional roles. From that, she created her owned non profit that focused on teaching these same girls about music, guitar in particular. It also catered to adult women who had a desire to play guitar. As a teacher, Emily tailors her entire curriculum to the student’s interests. She doesn’t make them do anything they don’t have a desire to learn. She also helps her students to realize her potential in being a female in music. Emily is particularly proud that two of her former students are about to leave for college, where they will be studying music.
How is your company different than others?
The obvious difference is that Emily caters her instruction to females. She also differs from others in that she has not only hands on experience, but also a great deal of formal education in music.
What is a mistake you’ve made and how did you fix it?
When she first started she would have recitals, the kids would perform but the adults would refuse to perform. She allowed for the adults not to participate, which in hindsight, was a mistake. In music, one of the things that is most important is conquering your fears of public performance which is why Emily wishes she would’ve pushed them to their limit more. She plans to hold adult recitals in Austin. |
