Austin Temp Agencies

Temp agencies help people experiencing unemployment to gain employment temporarily as they continue their job search or are in times of career transition. Typically, these agencies can help Austin job-seekers find jobs that last anywhere from one day to several months. Some jobs, called temp-to-hire can turn into full time employment.

This is a popular way to gain employment in a city like Austin, where so many flock for the weather, music, landscape, nightlife, and all the other great attractions we have. Unfortunately, for new-comers or long time residents alike, Austin is not the easiest place to get a well-paying job, making temp agencies more popular than in many other cities.

The first step in gaining temporary employment in Austin or the surrounding areas is to research different temp agencies as many specialize in a certain industry. Once you have found a few temp agencies that you feel match your expertise, call to schedule an appointment. At that time you will talk to one of the counselors, who will tell you about their agency and discuss your employment goals. Make sure to have an updated resume for their review so they can best match you based on your experience. In many cases you may be required to take aptitude tests such as spelling, typing, or other tests required by the company that is hiring. After you are finished with your initial consultation and any required tests, you will be on the call list of that agency. It is not unusual for agencies to get jobs the morning that the job would start, so be sure that you leave your schedule open enough to be able to drop what your doing and go to the assigned job. Also, the more you work, the more jobs you can expect to be called for.

When looking for the right temp agency in Austin, there are several factors to keep in mind:

Location: With most agencies, you will have to come in for an initial consultation as well as pick up all of your paychecks at the actual agency, rather than the place of employment. Make sure you choose an agency in Austin that is convenient for you.

Specialty: Many agencies cater to a specific industry, such as skilled trades, administrative, accounting, and technology. Try to stay within an agency that matches your previous experience.

Type of Job: Even though some agencies don’t have a “specialty” they may get the same type of job on a regular basis. For example, some agencies get a lot of administrative work, receptionist work, filing, etc. If this is not your forte, find out before you waste your time going in for the initial consultation.

Pay: Inquire about the pay range that most jobs guarantee with a particular agency. Most temp work pays a livable wage, but if you refuse to work for say, $10/hour, don’t waste your time on agencies that only deal with that level of pay.
