With So Many Austin Lawyers Available, How Do You Choose the Best One For You?

After determining what kind of lawyer you need (read Kinds of lawyers), how do you find which one is best for you? First, ask friends and family if they have recently used a lawyer or know of one that may work with you best. Ask them:

Did you know? In Austin, there are several non profit organizations that help with legal matters. Refer to ASC's non profit section to find out about these groups.

■ Why they suggest that individual or firm?
■ What their dispute was about?
■ When process in does the firm utilizes?
■ What are the general fees charged?
■ Were they pleased with the quality of work?
■ Were their any unexpected fees involved?
■ Did they feel completely informed on all issues in ordered to make intelligent decisions? Was the friend or family member involved throughout the entire process?
■ Did they work with just one lawyer or a team of lawyers?
■ What were the lawyer’s shortcomings?
■ Would your friend or family member go back?

If your friend or family member didn’t use the same kind of lawyer you are seeking, their advice may not be as valid, and however you may want to call the lawyer that they used anyway. If the lawyer is reputable, chances are they will be able to refer you to a good lawyer in the field you are in need of.

The other source you can use to find lawyers is a referral service. Referral services can be found in the yellow pages of the phone book or online. Most lawyer referral services use only lawyers that subscribe to their service. Because many lawyers establish a solid client base with time, many lawyers who subscribe to these services are young lawyers in search of a growing client base. It is important to keep this in mind, as these lawyers are not necessary more reputable than someone you would find just by picking a lawyer listing out of the yellow pages. Using a lawyer from a referral service doesn’t cost anything to you; however, the lawyer may charge a fee for an initial consultation. This fee should be quoted by the referral service itself.

Another good resource for finding a lawyer is the local bar association. They will have the names of all lawyers who are certified to practice in your area and the initial consultation is free of charge.

If your dispute is a work related issue and your place of employment has a union, the union will often give members free referrals for local lawyers.

Staring in 1976, lawyers have had permission to advertise via radio and television. In reality, few lawyers use television as a marketing medium; the vast majority prefer listing in the phone book. That doesn’t mean, however that you should veer away from those who do appear on television. These lawyers have no better or worse credentials than anyone you would find on your own. Keep in mind that advertising on TV. is expensive. The advertising lawyer must do a substantial amount of business to be able to afford this type of advertising. Many of these individuals employ several paralegals to do the work. In this case, find out who will be doing the majority of the work on your case, and if they actual lawyer communicates with you directly or if you will be working with several different people.

Many people are in dire need of a lawyer but cannot afford one. There are some ways you can negotiate services in this situation. For instance, if you have been injured in an accident at the workplace, the lawyer sometimes takes their fee out of your settlement or award. On the other hand, if your situation requires a flat fee or hourly charge, you have other options.

Let’s say you’re charged with a crime that requires jail time. If you can’t afford a lawyer, the court can appoint you legal representation. You are required to use the lawyer that is appointed to you because the fees are paid by the county. You may be turned down for legal representation of this kind if your income and /or assets are above the pre determined limits.

In addition, many lawyers accept credit cards for payment; others will arrange a payment plan with a down payment. Usually, you have to pledge your car or home for collateral.

If the matter is considered to be a civil situation, such as making a will or a landlord-tenant problem, you may qualify to be represented by the Legal Aid Society. The county bar association will have the information for these organizations. Most provide representation for those living in poverty or with very low incomes at little or no cost.

Law schools also have legal assistance programs.

Other organizations worth researching are the American Civil Liberties Union, Legal Defense and Education Fund, or certain ethnic advocacy groups such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
