Do You Need a Austin Lawyer?

How do you tell when you need a lawyer? We all have regular situations in which we feel that are right have been threatened or violated. But when do those violations cross the line between something we can handle on our own or something that needs professional attention?

Did you know? In Austin, there are several non profit organizations that help with legal matters. Refer to ASC's non profit section to find out about these groups.

When a situation occurs, look at what is at stake. The costs of a lawyer can really add up (refer to Lawyer’s fees), so make sure it is financially worth it to see one. Say, for example, you have a dispute with your drycleaner over a ruined suit. The suit probably doesn’t cost as much as a lawyer would. Likewise, a small dent in your car may be more affordable to fix without involving the legal profession. Before you make that assessment, attempt to talk with the other party involved. If the person is not receptive or cooperative in settlement efforts, you have a few options for a course of action. You can contact a lawyer, start a file in small claims court, or eat the cost on your own and hope for better luck next time.

In disputes that result in severe injuries, or extensive property damage it is imperative that you seek an attorney.

In civil disputes, a good rule to follow is if the amount involved is less than the small claims court limit in Texas , you probably can handle it yourself. If you encounter problems, seek advice at that time.

In a criminal situation, if there is more than a small fine involved or if a conviction may incur jail time it is recommended to use a lawyer. Keep in mind that there are some cases that do not incur jail time but do leave a permanent negative mark on your record. If this is the case, it is wise to use a lawyer because any permanent marks can affect your future employment.

In many kinds of disputes, the other party’s lawyer or insurance company may contact you to negotiate a settlement. They typically will try and resolve the issue as soon as possible by encouraging you to sign a document that releases the other person from all further liability. They may go as far as to persuade you that you don’t need representation because they “won’t be able to help you in this situation.” Insurance adjusters and lawyers are professional negotiators; don’t let them play you for a fool. They don’t represent you which mean your best interest is of no concern to the other party. Remember that if the other person has a lawyer or an insurance company working for them, you are definitely allowed to and probably should have someone representing you. As soon as you receive a call “from the other side,” act quickly and find someone you are comfortable with (see finding a lawyer).
